Ned Price: We Only Have a Few Weeks

The U.S. State Department spokesperson said that if Tehran and Washington fail to reach a mutual return to the JCPOA, the United States will pursue another path. Price reiterated that limited progress has been made in negotiations, which requires greater acceleration.

Ned Price expressed hope in his latest press conference that greater progress would be achieved in negotiations to revive the JCPOA. Referring to the limited time remaining, he warned that if America fails to reach an agreement with Iran, it will choose another way.

The U.S. State Department spokesperson said on Thursday, January 6, that discussions are about a few weeks, not a few months. In explaining the loss of opportunity, he pointed to the speed of Iran’s nuclear steps and reaching a point of no return.

Tehran has gradually violated its JCPOA commitments following the United States’ unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Price said in a press conference two days earlier: “The steps that the United States takes to reduce sanctions and the steps that Iran takes to return to JCPOA commitments are the focus of the negotiations.”

Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s representative in the Vienna negotiations, wrote in a tweet: “My understanding is that if Iran and the United States reach an understanding to revive the agreement, they will sit together at the JCPOA joint commission table and sanctions will be lifted.”

Hossein Amirabdollahian, Iran’s Foreign Minister, also tweeted that Vienna negotiations are proceeding on a “natural and good path.”

At the same time, he told Al Jazeera news network that if Western powers lift the sanctions included in the JCPOA and the sanctions imposed during Trump’s time, reaching an agreement in Vienna would be possible.

Meanwhile, General Aharon Haliva, commander of Israel’s military intelligence service, told senior policymakers in the country’s security cabinet that reviving the JCPOA would provide Israel with more time to prepare itself for different scenarios during periods of heightened tensions with Iran.

The “Times of Israel” publication, citing the general, wrote: “In this case, Israel would be able to prepare its capabilities for a potential confrontation without time pressure.”
