Increased Pressure on Atena Daemi in Prison; Beating of Sohila Hijab

Reports published on social media networks and human rights media outlets indicate pressure exerted by officials of Lakan Prison in Rasht on Atena Daemi, the designer of a car logo gifted to Ceausescu in support of Iran’s LGBTQ community, the dismissal of the spokesperson of Tehran Teachers’ Professional Association from education, and the beating of Sohila Hijab in prison.

  • Father of Atena Daemi Says His Daughter’s Life is in Danger in Lakan Prison of Rasht

Atena Daemi’s father reported on his Twitter account the intensification of pressure by officials of Lakan Prison in Rasht on Atena Daemi and wrote that “my daughter’s life is in danger.”

Hossein Daemi, Atena Daemi’s father, a detained civil activist, expressed concerns on Tuesday, October 3, in a series of tweets about his daughter’s condition in Lakan Prison of Rasht and wrote that Ms. Daemi, despite follow-ups, remains deprived of the right to phone contact.

Hossein Daemi, referring to some of the pressures exerted on this civil activist by prison officials, including the prison superintendent, wrote that the pressures on Atena have intensified following her disclosure of the conditions of prisoners held in this prison.

Atena Daemi had previously, in an audio file, alluded to the condition of non-political prisoners in Lakan Prison of Rasht, saying that these prisoners in Rasht Prison are like other prisons “display windows for the lies of the rulers, without having access to the slightest benefits.”

Earlier, Atena Daemi’s father told Voice of America that with the end of Atena’s five-year prison sentence, during which she had been imprisoned since 2016 without a single day of leave, her additional two-year and one-month prison sentence on the charge of “insulting the Supreme Leader” has been enforced since June of last year. In a ruling from Branch 24 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, Atena Daemi was sentenced to a total of two years imprisonment and 74 lashes on charges of “propaganda against the system” and “disrupting prison order.”

Ms. Daemi’s request for retrial was rejected by the Supreme Court last March, and she has been exiled to Lakan Prison in Rasht since late March.

  • Beating of Sohila Hijab in Prison

Reports published in some human rights media outlets indicate the beating of Sohila Hijab, a imprisoned lawyer, in Qarchak Prison of Varamin during a hunger strike by prisoners accused of violent crimes.

The human rights website “Hrana” in publishing this news wrote that on Saturday, September 30, coinciding with a sit-in and the wearing of a shroud by Sohila Hijab as a sign of protest in prison, a group of prisoners who, incited by one of the prison officials, attempted to force-feed her, but when this imprisoned lawyer resisted, they beat and assaulted her.

Earlier, Voice of America reported that Sohila Hijab, who had begun a hunger strike from September 19, ended her strike on Sunday, October 1, following a promise by officials to send a team from the judicial branch to Qarchak Prison of Varamin to visit and address the problems of political prisoners.

Sohila Hijab was sentenced by Tehran Revolutionary Court in March 2020 on charges of “propaganda against the system,” “assembly and conspiracy,” “disturbing public opinion with the intent to cause unrest,” “forming a group for women’s rights,” and “requesting a referendum and changing the Constitution” to 18 years imprisonment. This sentence was upheld on May 24, 2020, and this lawyer was arrested on that very day upon leaving court by the Sepah Tharalah of Tehran, with beating, and transferred to prison.
