Nasser Hamti, Psychiatrist and Civil Rights Activist, Transferred to Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan

Dr. Nasser Hamti, a psychiatrist and civil rights activist from Abdanan (in Ilam Province) and resident of Isfahan, was summoned and arrested on Tuesday, August 19.

Civil activists inside and outside Iran have reported that he was arrested Tuesday morning after being summoned to the prosecutor’s office for the execution of a two-year prison sentence, and transferred to Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan.

Mr. Hamti had tweeted on the evening of the 24th of Dey requesting participation in the protests of the 5th of Dey, and was arrested a few days later, but was released on bail on the 10th of Dey. He has been sentenced to two years in prison.

In his writings on social media, he was a strong critic of the suppression of protesters in November and the events that followed.

Countrywide protests in November 2019 began in relation to fuel price increases but quickly transformed into slogans that questioned the entire system and the performance of Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic.

Reuters reported that 1,500 people were killed in those protests. Iranian authorities have not yet released an accurate death toll from the November protests.
