Opposition to Transfer of Nahid Taghavi, Iranian-German Citizen, to Hospital Outside Prison

Maryam Klaren, daughter of Nahid Taghavi, an Iranian-German prisoner, announced that Evin Prison authorities have refused to transfer this detainee to a hospital for medical care despite confirmation by prison physicians.

Ms. Klaren, in a post published on her Twitter account on Sunday evening, August 1st, referred to her mother’s history of diabetes and her contraction of coronavirus, which has worsened her condition in recent days. She wrote that prison officials are unable to administer medication to Ms. Taghavi, and this has caused complications for her.

According to Ms. Klaren, the injection of medication to her mother last Thursday was accompanied by severe bleeding, but she was ultimately returned to the prison quarantine in the same condition.

Ms. Taghavi’s daughter also stated that despite confirmation by the prison doctor for urgent medical care outside the prison, their request has not been answered so far.

Nahid Taghavi, an Iranian-German citizen, was arrested by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Intelligence forces at her home in Tehran on October 16, 2020.

France Press reported earlier, citing the International Society for Human Rights in Germany, that Ms. Taghavi’s arrest was due to “her long-standing activities in the field of defending human rights in Iran, especially women’s rights and the defense of freedom of expression.”

In recent years, the Iranian government has arrested a large number of foreign nationals and dual-national Iranians on various charges including espionage, cooperation with foreign security institutions, and actions against the system. Some of these individuals have been exchanged with Iranian prisoners in other countries.
