Republican Members of U.S. Congress Criticize EU Representative’s Presence at Raisi’s Inauguration

Eight Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives sent a letter to Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, criticizing the presence of an EU representative at the inauguration ceremony of Ibrahim Raisi, the President of Iran.
Claudia Tenney from New York, Tom Braasch from Tennessee, Stephanie Brice from Oklahoma, Scott Perry from Pennsylvania, Brian Mast from Florida, Nicole Malliotakis from New York, Fred Keller from Pennsylvania, and Ronny Jackson from Texas signed this letter.
Claudia Tenney stated in this regard that while the European Union advocates for human rights and democratic principles on the global stage, it is simultaneously legitimizing Ibrahim Raisi’s election, which is shameful and disheartening.
This Republican member of the U.S. Congress continued, saying that Ibrahim Raisi is “a murderer who has killed thousands of people from his own country and came to power in an unjust and unfair election.”
The inauguration ceremony of the new president of the Islamic Republic of Iran took place on Thursday, the 14th of Mordad, in the parliament chamber, and Enrique Mora, Deputy Secretary-General of the European Union’s Foreign Service, was present at this ceremony.
The presence of the EU representative at Ibrahim Raisi’s inauguration, who was a member of the “death committee of four” and was one of the main architects of mass executions of political prisoners in 1367 (1988), sparked a wave of criticism, and critics assessed this action as contradictory to Europe’s human rights values.
Amnesty International also stated that Ibrahim Raisi should be subject to criminal investigation for his role in “crimes against humanity” and the massacre of 1367 (1988).
