Blinken’s Response to Plot to Abduct Masih Alinejad: We Will Not Tolerate Efforts to Intimidate Journalists

Anthony Blinken, U.S. Secretary of State, in a phone conversation with Masih Alinejad, an Iranian journalist, while bravely describing this journalist’s activities, emphasized that the United States always supports the work of independent journalists around the world, which is essential.

In a tweet published on Monday evening, July 28, referring to this phone conversation, he emphasized that the United States will not tolerate efforts to silence or intimidate journalists.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on July 23 that a four-member team affiliated with Iran’s intelligence apparatus had attempted to abduct Masih Alinejad from New York, but this plan was thwarted.

Masih Alinejad also, in a thread of tweets referring to this phone conversation, wrote that she discussed with the U.S. Secretary of State the events in Khuzestan and the suppression of protesters over the water crisis and imprisoned dual nationals in Iran, the events of November 2019 (Aban 98), as well as the downing of a Ukrainian airplane by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and asked the U.S. government to hold the Iranian government “accountable.”
