Iran Statistics: 80,000 Cases of Physical Spousal Abuse Examined in Forensic Medicine; 96% Share for Women

Data released by Iran’s Statistical Center reports the high number of women victims in physical spousal abuse cases in 1399 (2020-2021).
According to ISNA’s report on Tuesday, September 2, data from Iran’s Statistical Center shows that in the past year, 96 percent of examinations of “claimants of physical spousal abuse” in forensic medicine were related to women.
According to Iran’s Statistical Center report, last year a total of 80,187 cases of physical spousal abuse examinations were conducted by forensic medicine, with women’s share being 77,096 cases, equivalent to 96 percent, and men’s share being 2,991 cases, equivalent to 4 percent.
Based on these statistics, a total of 585,374 examinations related to physical altercations were conducted in forensic medicine last year, of which “claimants of physical spousal abuse” accounted for 13.6 percent.
According to this report, “any form of mistreatment and physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, or negligence committed by a husband against his wife or vice versa, is considered an instance of spousal abuse.”
According to this report, Iran’s Statistical Center did not publish annual statistics for 1399, and this data is in accordance with the sum of statistics from spring, summer, fall, and winter of 1399.
