Tavanir CEO: We Went to Collect Cryptocurrency Mining Centers, They Shot at Us

The CEO of Tavanir company said that during attempts by the company’s personnel to collect cryptocurrency mining centers, they were “shot at.”

Mohammad Hasan Metavalideh, speaking in a television interview on the evening of the second day of Khordad, did not mention the name of the company or individuals who shot at them, and said they have “sought help from security and judicial authorities” to solve the problem.

He estimated the amount of energy consumed for cryptocurrency mining at “two thousand megawatts” and said this amount is “equivalent to more than the consumption of seven provinces of the country or equivalent to 30 percent of Tehran’s consumption.”

In recent years, the supply of cheap electricity in Iran has encouraged this activity and even attracted individuals from other countries, particularly China, who have come to Iran for Bitcoin mining.

Last winter, coinciding with increased blackouts in Tehran and some other cities, Iranian media reported that the Chinese have a major share in this market by establishing and expanding cryptocurrency mining farms [Bitcoin] in Rafsanjan.

The Tavanir company CEO, confirming this matter, said: “The reason why a large portion of cryptocurrency producers have flocked to Iran is that energy in our country is cheap.”

According to Mr. Metavalideh, legal cryptocurrency producers consume about 300 megawatts of electricity, and the rest of the producers operate illegally.

Given the 20 percent growth resulting from cryptocurrency production, severe early and unprecedented heat, and a 50 percent decrease in water reserves in hydroelectric power plants, he predicted that a critical month awaits Iran’s electricity industry.

In recent days, many reports have been published by citizens on social media complaining about power cuts “without prior notice,” particularly in medical and health centers.
