Group of Women’s Rights Activists Gather at Laleh Park in Tehran

A group of civil activists and women’s rights advocates gathered at Laleh Park in Tehran on Tuesday, Esfand 19, calling for changes to some Iranian laws to restore women’s rights.
Images from this gathering published on social media networks and the Telegram channel of the Human Rights Defenders Center show this group of activists holding posters with slogans defending women’s rights.
Among the slogans featured on these posters are “Mandatory hijab is not natural,” “Stop violence against women,” “Women’s rights are to be claimed, not given,” “Women are generally slapped and sometimes beheaded,” “Honor killings must stop,” and “Poverty is doubled violence against women.”
According to reports, these civil activists were initially supposed to gather at the Artists Park in Tehran to commemorate International Women’s Day, but with the presence of a large number of security forces and police, this was not possible, and they ultimately assembled at Laleh Park.
One of the videos released from the civil activists’ gathering shows them singing the “Equality Anthem.”
Hours before this, Javaid Rahman, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, had called on the UN Human Rights Council to reform Iranian laws regarding women.
Mr. Rahman stated that in the Islamic Republic’s government, women and girls “continue to be treated as second-class citizens.”
