Layla Hosseinzadeh, Student Activist, Sentenced to Five Years in Prison

Branch 28 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court sentenced Layla Hosseinzadeh, a student activist, to five years in prison and a two-year ban from online activities.
Ms. Hosseinzadeh has been accused in her new case of “assembly and conspiracy with the intent to act against national security.”
Amir Raisian, her defense lawyer, tweeted that the basis of this charge is “organizing a small gathering of students” and Layla Hosseinzadeh’s participation in this gathering, which was held to celebrate the birthday and commemorate Mohammad Sharifi Moghaddam, a student and imprisoned dervish.
Layla Hosseinzadeh was among Tehran University students who were arrested during the December 2017 protests and released after two weeks on bail.
Following her 2017 arrest, the student activist was sentenced to 30 months in prison and a two-year travel ban on charges of “propaganda against the system.”
Layla Hosseinzadeh was arrested in August 2019 to serve this sentence and was transferred to Evin Prison. She was granted amnesty in March of that year and released.
