Nahid Taghavi, Dual Citizen Prisoner, Transferred to Women’s Ward

Nahid Taghavi, a German citizen of Iranian descent, was transferred to the women’s ward of Evin Prison after 151 days in solitary confinement. While Taghavi’s charges have not yet been announced, observers believe the Islamic Republic government is using her as a hostage.

Maryam Claren, daughter of Nahid Taghavi, announced on Wednesday, March 17 (Esfand 27) via a Twitter message the transfer of her mother to the women’s section of Evin Prison.

Claren wrote that Taghavi told her brother that her transfer to the women’s ward was the result of media attention to her situation as well as efforts made within the framework of the #freenahid campaign.

According to Ms. Claren, Taghavi’s fellow inmates have welcomed her warmly and informed her of international efforts for her release.

Maryam Claren emphasized that this is considered the “first victory” but efforts for her mother’s immediate and unconditional release will continue.

In her tweet, she stated: “Today I am happy that my mother is no longer isolated and can speak with the brave women who are behind prison bars.”

Maryam Claren thanked all media outlets in her tweet that covered the arrest of her mother.

Nahid Taghavi is 66 years old and was arrested at her home in Tehran on October 16. She had migrated to Germany with her family in 1982 and has traveled back and forth to Iran frequently over the past 15 years.
