Registration of Marriage for Over 9,000 Girls Aged 10 to 14 During This Summer

A report from Iran’s Statistical Center shows that during the summer of 2020, a total of 9,058 marriages of girls aged 10 to 14 were registered.
According to the organization’s report on “Iran’s social and cultural situation in the summer of 1399” released on Monday, February 1, 2021, during the same period, 188 divorces related to girls aged 10 to 14 were registered.
Child marriage, particularly of girls, has become a controversial issue in recent years.
In recent years, some female members of parliament have attempted to change the marriage age in Iran’s laws, but faced resistance from other lawmakers and clergy.
In this regard, the bill “Preventing Marriage with Children” in 1397 was rejected in the judicial committee of the Islamic Consultative Assembly.
According to Islamic law, the age of maturity for girls is 9 years old and for boys is 15 years old.
According to Massoumeh Ebtekar, Vice President of Iran for Women and Family Affairs, 30,000 marriages of girls under 14 occur annually in the country.
