UN Survey: Two-Thirds of World’s People Consider Climate Situation an Emergency

According to a global survey conducted by the United Nations, approximately two-thirds of people say that humanity is facing a climate emergency.
According to French news agency AFP, this survey, the largest of its kind, was conducted by sending questionnaires to 1.2 million people in 50 countries around the world.
Researchers from the UN Development Program (UNDP) and Oxford University, who conducted this survey, reported on Wednesday that respondents—both young and old, poor and rich, men and women—in 50 countries covering more than half of the world’s population also listed various political options for solving this problem.
Steven Fisher, a sociologist at Oxford University who helped design the survey and process the data, told the French news agency: “Concern about the climate emergency is much more widespread than we thought.”
According to the news agency, these findings indicate that the global climate movement, which began in 2019 under the leadership of Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, continues to expand despite falling out of the public eye due to the emergence of the coronavirus crisis.
