Widespread Oil Leak and Fire in Marun-Isfahan Pipeline

The Marun-Isfahan pipeline caught fire following a rupture, and images circulated on social media indicate widespread oil leakage into the Serkhanroud River.

The National Iranian Oil Pipelines and Telecommunications Company reported on Sunday, December 23, that the 30-inch crude oil pipeline from Marun to Isfahan ruptured at kilometer 229 in the Serkhan city area, which falls under Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province.

The ISNA news agency also reported, citing the district administrator of Miankuh in Ardal County of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, that at 11 o’clock on Sunday the oil pipeline located in the Miankuh area of Ardal County ruptured and caught fire.

Emamidad Shahbazi stated that the pipeline is currently burning.

According to him, no one was killed in the incident; however, “the oil leak into the soil and rainfall will certainly cause oil pollution in the Serkhanroud River in the coming days.”

The aforementioned pipeline transports crude oil produced from the Marun region fields to the Isfahan Refinery. The Isfahan Refinery processes 375,000 barrels of oil daily.

Photos and videos circulated in the media indicate a massive fire in this pipeline, with a large volume of oil leaking into the Serkhanroud River.

The acting head of the Crisis Management Department of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province also stated: “With a probability exceeding 90 percent, pipeline deterioration is the cause of the incident.”
