U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Calls for Investigation into 1988 Executions in Iran

The U.S. State Department’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor on Thursday, December 10, expressed support for a United Nations request to Tehran to conduct an independent investigation into the 1988 executions in Iran and called on the international community to compel the Islamic Republic to accept this request.
Robert Destro tweeted: “The United States reiterates the UN’s call for an independent investigation into mass disappearances and extrajudicial executions in 1988 in Iran. Despite allegations of involvement by current senior officials, it is highly unlikely that the regime would conduct its own investigation.”
He added: “The regime has failed to provide information to families about the fate of their loved ones. Instead, they have threatened the families and desecrated the places where victims were buried. We call on the international community to hold the regime accountable to the UN’s request.”
Recently, a group of UN human rights experts warned in a letter to Iran’s government that the country’s previous and continuing human rights violations regarding the 1988 mass execution of prisoners in summer could constitute crimes against humanity, and if these violations continue, they will request international investigations.
