Two Days After Oil Tanker Release; South Korean Prime Minister Visits Iran for First Time in Islamic Republic’s History

Chang Sak-kyun, Prime Minister of South Korea, arrived in Tehran on Sunday, April 12 and was welcomed by Ishaq Jahangiri, Vice President of Iran.

Mr. Kyun’s three-day visit, which is the first visit by a South Korean prime minister to Iran in the past 44 years, takes place just two days after the release of the South Korean oil tanker.

According to Bloomberg, discussions will center on $7 billion of Iran’s blocked assets in South Korea, which is expected to serve as a confidence-building measure between the Islamic Republic and global powers, likely resulting in a successful outcome.

It is reported that Mr. Kyun will have meetings during his visit with Hassan Rouhani, President of the Republic; Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Speaker of Parliament; and Ali Larijani, Advisor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Leader of the Islamic Republic.

In the same connection, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency has also reported that meetings with officials of South Korean companies operating in Iran such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and SK Networks will be among Chang Sak-kyun’s other programs.
