Trump’s Attorney General William Barr Resigns One Month Before End of Administration

William Bill Barr, the U.S. Attorney General, has stepped down from his position. Trump stated that Barr’s reason for resigning was to spend the Christmas and New Year holidays with his family. Trump had criticized Barr’s performance severely the previous week.

William Barr, Attorney General of the Trump administration, resigned from his position with only 35 days remaining in his tenure. Donald Trump announced the news on Twitter, writing that Barr “resigned because he wanted to spend the Christmas holidays with his family and will officially leave his post on December 23rd”.

In his Twitter message, Trump described Barr’s work as Attorney General as “excellent” and said the two had worked very well together. William Barr also praised Trump’s work in his resignation statement, speaking of the “many unprecedented successes” that the Trump administration had brought to the American people.

Barr also described Trump’s term as “historic” because he was able to overcome his political opponents “with steadfast resistance.” According to him, “only a few people could have withstood such attacks.” Barr commended Trump’s successes in the economic field, strengthening the military, and reducing illegal immigration to the United States.

Barr’s deputy, Jeff Rosen, will oversee the Justice Department in the coming month.

A Collaboration Not Without Problems

Certainly, the collaboration between William Barr and Trump was not entirely free of tension. It was just last Saturday (December 12) that Trump criticized Barr severely. The Wall Street Journal had previously reported that the Attorney General had been aware of an investigation into Joe Biden’s son since spring 2020, but wanted to keep it suspended due to electoral considerations.

Trump, however, called Barr’s action “a great disappointment” and wrote: “Why didn’t Bill Barr inform the public of the truth about Hunter Biden (Joe Biden’s son) before the elections?”

Hunter Biden announced last Wednesday that he was under federal investigation for “tax matters.” During the election campaign, Trump also repeatedly targeted Joe Biden’s son with attacks, continuously accusing the Biden family of corruption.

The background to these accusations also involves Hunter Biden’s business activities in Ukraine and China. Between 2014 and 2019, he held a sensitive position on the supervisory board of the Burisma gas company in Ukraine.
