Journalist Vida Rabani Arrested for Second Time in One Year in Iran

Reports indicate that journalist Vida Rabani was arrested by security forces on Monday, December 3rd.

Political activists and several journalists shared this news on social media. Among them, Zia Nabavi, a political activist, posted on his Twitter account about Rabani’s arrest, writing: “She was arrested last year after the protests following the Ukrainian plane crash.”

Social media outlets reporting the news stated that the reasons for the arrest of this journalist, who has a background of working with the weekly magazine “Seda,” remain unknown, but reports indicate that she has been transferred to Evin prison.

The arrest of this journalist comes as the Islamic Republic has repeatedly taken security action against activists and journalists. Among these examples is the confirmation of a three-year sentence for Keyvan Samimi, a journalist and editor-in-chief of the magazine Iran Farda, in the appeals court.

In the 2019 Reporters Without Borders world press freedom rankings, the Islamic Republic of Iran ranks 170th among 180 countries worldwide.

The U.S. State Department has previously published content titled “Forty Years of Unfulfilled Promises” by the Islamic Republic on its Persian Twitter account, writing about corruption, lack of freedom of speech, lack of justice, and unfulfilled economic promises by Islamic Republic officials.

In these tweets, the U.S. State Department wrote: “Forty years ago, Ayatollah Khomeini promised freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Today, Iran has one of the most repressed media environments. The ruling regime has only brought forty years of failure.”
