Third Day of Protests Over Death of George Floyd in Minneapolis; Mayor Declares State of Emergency

As protests over the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died during police arrest in Minneapolis, continued for the third consecutive night, the city’s mayor declared a “state of emergency.”

Meanwhile, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s team requested the National Guard to prevent violence on the third night of the protesters’ gathering.

On Monday, June 25th, a video was circulated on social networks showing four Minneapolis police officers present during the arrest of a Black man named George Floyd, with one officer placing his knee on the neck of the unarmed man. Floyd repeatedly said at the time that he could not breathe, but the officers ignored him, and hours later, the Black man died in the hospital.

Following Floyd’s death and the circulation of the video showing the police’s conduct toward him, hundreds gathered in Minnesota in protest. Meanwhile, some media outlets reported that angry protesters attacked and looted several stores.

Minneapolis Mayor announced on Tuesday that four officers of the Minneapolis police department were fired from their jobs.

Additionally, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, June 7th, expressed condolences over George Floyd’s death and said he has asked federal police and the Department of Justice to investigate the matter.

The American president called the death of this man tragic and a tragedy. He expressed sympathy with George Floyd’s family.

The Minneapolis mayor has filed charges against these police officers.
