800 Villages in Khuzestan Lack Access to Sustainable Drinking Water

The representative of Ahvaz in parliament said that 800 villages in Khuzestan province lack access to sustainable drinking water.

Mojtaba Yousefi told the FARS news agency on Monday, August 20, that this situation exists despite the province having 5 major dams and 7 rivers.

Referring to the approval of withdrawing 100 million dollars from the National Development Fund to resolve Khuzestan’s water and sewage problems, he said the funds have not yet been allocated.

The Ahvaz representative also stated that Iran’s Planning and Budget Organization uses an exchange rate of 10,000 tomans per euro when converting credits to tomans, while the euro rate in the NIMA system is “significantly higher.”

Pointing out that 50 million euros are supposed to be allocated in the first phase, he said if the government’s decision is implemented based on 10,000 tomans per euro, we will witness an 800 billion toman reduction in allocated credits.

The water crisis in Khuzestan villages has been raised repeatedly over the past year. Last June, residents of the Gheyzaniyeh area, 45 kilometers from Ahvaz, gathered in protest against the situation, which resulted in a confrontation with security forces.
