Video Released of Another Police-Caused Death; This Time in Esfarayen

Following the release of a video showing a citizen being beaten by law enforcement officers in Esfarayen that resulted in his death, the military prosecutor of North Khorasan Province stated that the victim’s family has filed a complaint titled “shooting resulting in death.”
On Saturday, November 3rd, a video was circulated on social media showing two law enforcement officers standing over a person on a sidewalk and engaging with him, with the videographer stating that police shot the injured person.
Evidence suggests the incident occurred in the city of Esfarayen, and the victim has been identified as 37-year-old Abbas Minbashi.
Mojtaba Zare, the military prosecutor of North Khorasan Province, announced on Sunday, November 4th, referring to the video, that the victim’s family, by appearing at the military prosecutor’s office, filed a complaint titled shooting resulting in death.
According to ISNA news agency, he added that “we have requested the provincial coroner’s office to carefully and quickly conduct an autopsy and determine the cause of death and the type of injuries sustained.”
Mr. Zare further stated that to investigate the manner of the victim’s death, judicial officials have been asked to carefully examine the scene of the altercation and collect and submit footage from surveillance cameras present at the location.
This is the second case of beatings resulting in death by law enforcement that has become public in recent days.
Previously, a video was circulated on social media showing a police officer using pepper spray and an electric shock device on the face and body of a man whose hands were bound with handcuffs to a bar. The victim’s name was announced as Mehrdad Sepehri.
The incident occurred in Mashhad, and Mahdi Akhlagi, the military prosecutor of Khorasan Razavi Province, said on Saturday that “a case has been opened in this regard at the Khorasan Razavi military prosecutor’s office, and the family of the deceased has also submitted their complaint to this office.”
Mr. Akhlagi announced on Sunday that “the offending officer was arrested following the death of a young man during arrest by order of the military prosecutor’s office judge.”
He added: “Two other officers from the police station who transferred the victim to the station have been investigated, and investigations are ongoing with witnesses and informants and will continue tomorrow.”
The release of this video has angered many social media users, and some of them, while pointing to extensive media coverage of George Floyd’s death at the hands of an American police officer in Iranian state media, criticized the silence of state radio and television regarding this Iranian citizen’s death, calling it a double standard.
