Indicators of Gender Inequality in Iran

A sociologist and university professor stated: Iran’s ranking on the global gender inequality index is not favorable. Iran’s ranking on the gender gap index was an average of 108 in 2006 and reached 140 in 2017. These statistics show that we have experienced a decline.

According to him: Regarding gender equality, we face very serious obstacles and limitations in the legal system and social attitudes. For example, you know that in the political sphere, in some political positions, most importantly the presidency, women do not have the right to vote or run as candidates. Or our legal system is unequal regarding certain issues such as inheritance and diya (blood money). In other words, we face a type of structural limitations in the legal system that themselves reinforce the sense of gender inequality in society. The ban on women’s presence in stadiums is another inequality, and the percentage of these indicators has been in decline over these four decades.
