Death toll from coronavirus in Iran reaches 10,000 mark

The daily death toll from COVID-19 disease in Iran has reached 133 people, the highest number since mid-Farvardin to date. According to official statistics from the Ministry of Health, in at least eight provinces the trend of coronavirus infection is not declining.

The Ministry of Health spokesperson presented the latest statistics on coronavirus developments in Iran up to noon on Wednesday, the 4th of Tir (June 24) at his daily press briefing.

According to Sima Sadat Lari, 2,531 new cases of COVID-19 were identified in Iran in the 24 hours leading up to noon on Wednesday, bringing the total number of infected people to 212,501.

Lari announced the number of coronavirus victims in the past day as 133 people. Thus, since the official confirmation of the coronavirus outbreak in Iran on the last day of Bahman month to now, the death toll has been 9,996 people.

Increase in death toll similar to mid-Farvardin days

The lowest daily death toll from coronavirus in the past four months was on the 5th of Khordad with 34 people. The number of victims over the past ten days has been consistently three-digit, except for one day.

From approximately mid-Farvardin to now, the number of deaths related to COVID-19 disease has rarely exceeded 130 per day.

Based on official Ministry of Health statistics, over the past two days, the number of newly identified cases increased by 86 and deaths increased by 12.

Sima Sadat Lari said at Wednesday’s press briefing: “In the provinces of Khuzestan, Kurdistan, Hormozgan, Bushehr and some areas in the provinces of Fars, Lorestan, Kermanshah and Golestan, we have not seen a decline in the rate of infection and hospitalization of COVID-19 patients.”

Incomplete statistics on increased infections in provinces

According to evidence, besides these provinces, there are other regions and cities where the infection trend is increasing, and statements from local officials confirm this issue.

One of these areas is Tehran province. Alireza Zali, commander of the coronavirus control task force in Tehran, said on Monday that the trend of coronavirus infection in the capital is “increasing at a gentle slope.”

Reza Jalili Khoshnoud, head of Shahid Taleghani Hospital and member of the coronavirus control task force in Tehran, also told the ISNA news agency on the 4th of Tir that “the number of patients visiting and being hospitalized for coronavirus” at this hospital has increased by about 50 percent from the beginning of Khordad to now.

The governor of South Khorasan recently said that from about 15 days ago, the trend of coronavirus infection in this province has been on the rise. Similar reports are also heard from some areas in other provinces including Kerman, Razavi Khorasan, Qazvin and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad.

Field reports and statements from local officials show that the number of provinces where at least in part the spread of coronavirus and COVID-19 infection is increasing is more than the number announced by the Ministry of Health spokesperson.
