Abadan Governor Announces Complete Quarantine of City Due to Corona Outbreak

Following reports about the critical situation in Khuzestan Province, the governor of Abadan announced that government offices in the city will be closed and entry points to Abadan will be blocked.

According to Tasnim News Agency, Zein al-Abedin Mousavi, the special governor of Abadan, said on Sunday, May 11: “In order to break the corona chain,” all banks and government offices except health and medical services will be closed until the end of the current week, and during this period, entry points from Ahvaz and Mahshahr will also be blocked.

A day earlier, he had also strongly criticized the lifting of strict measures and social distancing regulations, saying on a television program: “The people of Abadan are falling apart.”

Local and medical officials in Khuzestan Province had warned about the spread of coronavirus in the province weeks earlier; however, only in the last two days did the deputy minister and spokesman of the Ministry of Health describe the situation in this province as “worrying” and “overflowing.”

Islamic Republic officials do not announce the number of coronavirus cases and deaths in a disaggregated and provincial manner, but according to some reports, in recent days an average of 200 new cases are being registered daily in Khuzestan Province.
