President Trump: We Will Not Lift Sanctions Against Iran Under Any Circumstances

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, spoke about Iran’s situation, saying that their financial condition is very dire, their inflation rate is unprecedented, and their circumstances are very troubling. He said: “They can solve this problem quickly. We can solve it in 24 hours. We’ll have to see what happens.”
President Trump added that sanctions will not be lifted under any circumstances.
On Wednesday, September 4th, President Trump, during a meeting on the status of Hurricane Dorian at his office in the White House, responded to a question about Iran: “I can only say that when you hear that they’ve gone through the worst year of … the past 50 years, more than half a century ago, I think they want to solve their problem.”
The U.S. President, regarding the possibility of meeting with Iran’s president on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, said: “Anything is possible. They want their problem solved. They have a very big problem. We’ll have to see what happens.”
When asked by a reporter whether it is possible to meet with Hassan Rouhani in the presence of Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, President Trump said: “I don’t know. I am very grateful for President Macron’s efforts. But we do not pursue matters through Emmanuel Macron. Others are in direct contact with us, and we don’t need to pursue matters through other countries. If we wanted to, we could get help from Japan. Japan is one of their main oil buyers. … But we don’t need others for an agreement, and if we want to, we will pursue it directly ourselves.”
The U.S. President, alluding to proposals from other countries to help resolve this issue, emphasized that everyone, even in this G7 meeting, said they do not want Iran to be equipped with nuclear weapons and Iran should not have access to nuclear weapons under any circumstances.
When asked by a reporter who said that Iranians have stated they will not negotiate unless America returns to the JCPOA agreement, President Trump said: “No! That was not their latest statement. But they said in a different way that as long as certain measures are not taken… for example, that sanctions are lifted. But such a thing will not happen. Of course, they did not raise the issue in the way you mentioned; but their ultimate meaning was the same, and such a thing will not happen.”
The United States imposed new sanctions against Iran on Tuesday and Wednesday.
