Prince Reza Pahlavi Criticizes Parliamentary Silence Over Iran’s Reduced Caspian Sea Share

Coinciding with the publication of reports about “the handover of part of Iran’s rights in the Caspian Sea,” Prince Reza Pahlavi criticized the silence of members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly (parliament) on this matter.
Prince Reza Pahlavi wrote on Twitter: “It is appropriate that you rise up to protect and safeguard water, land, and national interests, and unitedly compel those sitting in parliamentary seats to defend your rights and prevent the repetition and continuation of unfortunate historical events.”
The leaders of five Caspian Sea coastal countries signed two memoranda of understanding between the five governments on August 12 in Aktau, Kazakhstan. The Islamic Republic had previously stated equal rights of 20 percent for the five countries in past years, but some activists say the new memorandum, which Iran has also signed, means that the Islamic Republic has backed down from this claim and agreed to a share of approximately 11 percent.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman rejected these concerns and said that no new developments have occurred in this regard.
Iran and the countries of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Azerbaijan are located around the Caspian Sea.
