On the Brink of One Thousandth Day of American Student’s Detention in Iran; From Research on the Qajar Era to Imprisonment Behind Evin Prison Bars

The wife of «Xiyue Wang,» a Chinese-American prisoner in Iran, has described her husband’s detention by the Islamic Republic as unjust in a statement and has called for international community assistance to secure his freedom.

The statement by «Hua Qu» was published Friday in The Washington Post, just as the number of days her husband is spending in Evin Prison in Tehran is about to reach one thousand.

Xiyue Wang went to Iran in 2016 to conduct his research project on governance and bureaucracy during the Qajar era, but more than two years ago he was arrested on espionage charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

In line with the United States’ twelve conditions for changing the behavior of the Islamic Republic, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has repeatedly asked Tehran officials to immediately release imprisoned American citizens held in Iran.

Last month, he posted photos of them in two tweets marking the anniversary of the liberation of American hostages from Iran, and indirectly stated that hostage-taking has been intertwined with the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran from the very beginning.
