Floods in Iran: Rain Continues in 15 Provinces, Body of Second Victim Found in Golestan

According to Iran’s traffic police, rain and snow continue to fall in 15 provinces, while fog persists in five other provinces. Two major routes in Razavi Khorasan have been closed, and the death toll from a boat capsizing in Golestan has risen to two.

The deputy governor of Golestan province said on Wednesday morning that the death toll from a motorboat capsizing carrying volunteers, rescue workers, and flood-affected residents had risen to two.

Ali Reza Hosseini stated that rescue workers found the body of the second missing person on Wednesday morning.

Earlier, the Iranian Red Crescent had stated on its Twitter account that following the capsizing of a boat carrying at least 21 people in Golestan, 18 were injured, one was killed, and two others were missing.

However, a report from the state news agency IRNA, apparently citing the deputy governor of Golestan, provides different figures for the victims. According to this report, the motorboat was carrying at least 25 people, and following the capsizing, two people were killed and four others went missing; the remaining passengers were rescued.

Golestan is located on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea, in the western part of Golestan province. Parts of the city are currently underwater.

Rainfall and Fog Continue in 20 Provinces

Iran’s traffic police say that in parts of East Azerbaijan, Mazandaran, Zanjan, and Hamadan provinces snow has been reported, and in Tehran, Hamadan, Zanjan, Mazandaran, Hormozgan, Fars, Gilan, West Azerbaijan, Kermanshah, North Khorasan, and Razavi Khorasan provinces, rain has been recorded.

According to Iran’s traffic police, Ardabil, Alborz, Zanjan, Qazvin, and the elevated regions of Semnan provinces are experiencing fog.

Ahed Vazife, director general of forecasting and early warning at the Meteorological Organization, also stated that on Thursday, the 8th of Farvardin, another weather system will bring rain and temporary strong winds to the western half, central, northeastern, and eastern parts of the country, with snow in cold and elevated areas expected.

Two Major Routes Closed in Razavi Khorasan

Mashhad Airport’s public relations office announced that due to a significant reduction in horizontal visibility at the airport, incoming flights to the airport have been suspended since early Wednesday morning. Two major routes in Razavi Khorasan province have also been closed following recent rainfall.

Hassan Jafari, public relations director of Mashhad Airport, told the state news agency IRNA that flights resumed at 4:40 AM, and the airport is currently operational with flights in progress.

Mashhad International Airport is the second busiest airport in the country after Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport, with an average of 180 to 250 incoming and outgoing flights daily.

Reports have also been received from Razavi Khorasan province of two major routes being closed.

As Colonel Hadi Omidvar, chief of the highway police of Razavi Khorasan, informed on Wednesday morning, the routes “Kashmar to Kohsorkh due to landslide and flooding” and the route “Quchan to Sabzevar due to water overflow in a section of the road” have been closed.

In addition to roads in Razavi Khorasan, the Chalous road remains closed, but the Heraz and Firouzkouh roads have been reopened.
