Revolutionary Court Sentences 13 August Protest Detainees to Six Months to One Year in Prison

Tehran’s Revolutionary Court has sentenced 13 protesters from August demonstrations this year to six months to one year in prison on charges of “actions against national security through participation in illegal gatherings.”
According to the Iran News Agency (IRNA), of these 13 defendants, 5 are women and the rest are men. The Iranian state news agency also reported that these sentences were issued taking into account the “expression of remorse” by the defendants.
The August protests this year and December protests last year took place in dozens of Iranian cities following a sharp increase in prices and economic upheaval, and were met with government suppression.
United States officials condemned the suppression of protesters in Iran. Amnesty International also, referring to the suppression of people in 2018, called this year a “year of shame” for the Islamic Republic.
