Prestigious Economist Magazine, London Edition, Selected Armenia as ‘Country of the Year 2018’ on Wednesday

The Economist explained in this regard that the purpose of selecting this title is not choosing the “most influential” or “wealthiest” country, but rather selecting a country that has made progress toward democracy over the past year.
The Economist recalls that Nikol Pashinyan, a journalist and former parliament representative, came to power “legally and properly” following the outbreak of “a wave of discontent with corruption and inefficiency.”
The coalition of Nikol Pashinyan’s supporters, Armenia’s interim prime minister, succeeded in achieving a striking victory in the country’s early parliamentary elections.
Pashinyan’s supporters easily managed to surpass their main rivals by obtaining more than 70 percent of the votes.
The Economist continues: “An ancient country that has often had a troubled government in a turbulent region has now found an opportunity to achieve democracy and modernization. For this reason, Armenia is in our view the country of the year.”
