Senior UN Official Visits Lake Urmia Revival Project

The state news agency IRNA reported that the Director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) visited projects of the Lake Urmia Revival Headquarters, accompanied by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Japanese Embassy and a representative of that country’s international cooperation organization.

IRNA states that the foreign officials “visited the pilot site of this joint international project (for reviving Lake Urmia) in the village of Telkhab in Miandoab”.

According to this report, the “Japan International Cooperation Agency” on behalf of the Tokyo government “assists in reviving Lake Urmia through financial contributions, understanding the hydrological system cycle, and cooperation in evaluating measures for Lake Urmia revival”.

Japan is among the countries that have provided financial assistance to the United Nations Development Program for the revival of Lake Urmia.

Two years ago, the then-head of Iran’s Environmental Protection Organization and the director of the Lake Urmia Revival Headquarters stated that the only way to secure financial resources for Lake Urmia revival is “foreign borrowing”.

The executive operations of Lake Urmia revival began in the summer of 2014.
