European Union Sanctions Iranian Intelligence Agency Over ‘Assassination Plot’

The European Union is sanctioning an Iranian intelligence agency over “designing assassination” within the territory of the union. Denmark had accused Iran’s intelligence apparatus of planning to kill opponents of the Islamic government in Danish soil.

Countries of the “European Union” have agreed to impose sanctions against an Iranian intelligence agency that, according to them, has been involved in terrorist activities within the territory of the union.

Anders Samuelsen, Denmark’s Foreign Minister, while announcing this news on his Twitter account, described it as “an important day for Europe” and “a strong message from the European Union” to make Iran understand that “we will not tolerate such behavior”.

“Assassination Plot”

Last October, Denmark’s Foreign Ministry requested that the European Union impose new sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

According to Denmark’s security agency, an Iranian-Norwegian individual, acting on behalf of an Iranian intelligence agency, intended to carry out actions against the leader of the “Ahvaz National Resistance Movement” group, but was arrested by Danish police in September.

According to Finn Borch Andersen, head of Denmark’s security agency, the security services of Norway and Sweden helped in gathering intelligence for that agency.

According to Danish police, the arrested individual took photographs of members of the “Ahvaz National Resistance Movement” group who live as political refugees in Denmark.

After his arrest, he denied the charge of attempting terrorism, and Iran’s Foreign Ministry also denied any involvement in the incident, describing it as “an attempt by enemies to damage Iran’s relations with Europe under these sensitive circumstances”.
