Taher Qadiryan’s Mother: My Son’s Physical Condition in Evin Prison is Severe

The mother of Taher Qadiryan, one of the defendants in the case involving environmental activists, reported on Wednesday, March 13, about her son’s weight loss and the “deterioration” of his physical condition in prison.

According to IRNA, Taher Qadiryan’s mother said after visiting her son in Evin Prison: “In a recent visit I had with Taher, his physical condition was not good and he had lost a significant amount of weight.”

Taher Qadiryan, along with Sam Rajabi, Amirhossein Khaleghi, Houman Jokar, Sepideh Kashani, Niloufar Bayani, Abdolreza Kouhpaie, and Morad Tahbaz, were arrested last year by the Revolutionary Guards Intelligence Organization on charges of “espionage for foreigners,” charges that have been rejected by the Ministry of Intelligence and Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, but the judiciary and the Revolutionary Guards insist on them.

Taher Qadiryan’s mother says her son has developed IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and should be treated and cared for outside of prison.

She also said in response to the question of whether her son’s lawyer, who was granted a visitation order by the judge at the fifth court session, was able to conduct the visit: “Unfortunately, despite nearly a month passing since the judge’s order for the visit, it has still not taken place, and the reason is that on the first attempt to conduct the visit, we were told that the case expert was not present, so the visit was not possible.”

She continued: “On the second occasion, following a call from the experts, my son’s lawyer went to the prison to conduct the visit, but they asked the lawyer for her bar association membership card, while about a year ago bar association membership cards became electronic, and since the experts did not accept the electronic bar association membership cards, the visit did not take place again, and we are still waiting for the case experts to facilitate the visit.”

While five court sessions have been held for these eight environmental activists, in these court sessions, the lawyers appointed by these environmental activists are not present, and only three lawyers “trusted” by the judiciary are supposed to defend them.

Meanwhile, Kazem Hosseini, one of these lawyers, had previously reported that Revolutionary Guards personnel do not even allow these lawyers to speak with these environmental activists during court sessions.

IRNA reports that the case of the eight environmental activists has eight defendants, for whom the Revolutionary Court prosecutor has issued an indictment charging four with “corruption on earth,” three with “espionage,” and one with “assembly and conspiracy against national security.”

According to this report, the charges against four defendants in this case were initially espionage, which was later changed to corruption on earth.

International human rights organizations have so far criticized the process of holding trials and prosecuting these environmental activists.

In this regard, the United Nations Environment Programme, while expressing “deep” concern about the trial situation of these eight imprisoned environmental activists, called on the government of the Islamic Republic to support the legal rights of individuals who have dedicated their lives to their country’s unique environment.
