Amnesty International Calls for Release of Civil Activist Farhad Meysami

Amnesty International has called on Iranian authorities to release Farhad Meysami, a human rights activist.

Last week, agents from the Ministry of Intelligence searched the homes of several civil activists and political prisoners, including Nasrin Sotoudeh and Farhad Meysami. According to the families of these political prisoners, the agents were looking for “breast badges” related to protests by the Girls of Revolution Street movement against mandatory hijab.

In a statement released on Monday, August 26, Amnesty International stated: “Mandatory hijab violates women’s human rights and is contrary to the prohibition of torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment. Protesting violations of human rights is not a crime and is the right of every human being.”

Farhad Meysami, a civil activist, physician, and former publisher of entrance examination preparation books for Ayandehsazangroup Publishing, was arrested on July 30 and has been on a hunger strike since that time.

In recent years, he had participated in several sit-ins and protest gatherings related to prisoners’ rights and mandatory hijab.
