Floods in Iran’s Northern Provinces Cause Heavy Damage and Multiple Deaths

Floods and waterlogging resulting from heavy rainfall over the past two days have caused severe damage and multiple fatalities in four northern provinces of Iran.

The ISNA news agency reported on Saturday, October 5th, that floods in the provinces of North Khorasan, Golestan, Mazandaran, and Gilan have resulted in 7 deaths, while the Red Crescent Organization had previously reported 5 deaths and provided emergency assistance to 1,400 people.

Heavy rainfall that began on Friday triggered flooding and waterlogging in cities across the four northern provinces, including Nowshahr, Chalus, Tonekabon, Ramsar, Bahashah, Freydoonkenar, and Sari in Mazandaran Province.

The cities of Ramsar and Tonekabon are in critical condition, and schools in western Mazandaran Province have been closed.

In addition, the towns of Someh Sara, Rasht, Chabakasar, Qaleh Rudkhan, Rudsar, Lahijan, Massal, and Talesh in Gilan Province, as well as several towns in Golestan and North Khorasan provinces, have also suffered damage.

Reports indicate power outages in some areas due to damage to infrastructure, destruction of several bridges, flooding of some homes, and loss of infrastructure facilities.

According to reports from Iran’s domestic news agencies, flooding has caused extensive damage not only to roads, bridges, and infrastructure, but also significant harm to gardens, agricultural lands, and agricultural storage facilities.
