Residents of Borazjan Gather in Protest Over Water Shortage

A group of residents in Borazjan, Bushehr Province, held a gathering in protest against water shortage.

According to ILNA news agency, Ali Akbar Fatemi, Bushehr’s representative to the Supreme Council of Provinces, announced on Sunday, July 22, that residents of Borazjan city held a gathering in the city center and also set fires at the city entrance, an action that led to police intervention.

In recent weeks, Borazjan citizens had held consecutive daily gatherings protesting water cuts and rationing. With the intensification of water problems in Bushehr Province, the head of the water and wastewater department of Bushehr city resigned due to inability to resolve the crisis.

Previously, the cities of Khorramshahr and Abadan also faced water cuts and water salinity issues, prompting residents to hold protest gatherings. These gatherings subsequently resulted in police intervention, clashes, and the detention of at least 10 people.

The drought crisis, severe reduction in water resources, and drying up of Iran’s lakes and rivers have intensified in recent years.

Excavation experts, in addition to reduced rainfall, consider incorrect water management policies and uncontrolled dam construction as factors contributing to the destruction of water resources in Iran.
