Earthquake Strikes Kerman Province This Time

An earthquake shook Kerman province early Friday morning. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the “Hajdak” region, one of the districts of Ravor city in Kerman province. The tremor from this 6.1 magnitude earthquake was also felt in the cities of Sirjan and Kerman.

Early Friday morning on Azar 10 (December 1) at 6:02 AM, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook parts of Kerman province. According to the latest reports about the Kerman earthquake, a number of residents in the province have been injured. No reports of deaths from this earthquake have been released at the time of publication.

IRNA news agency, publishing minute-by-minute reports of the Kerman earthquake, announced the number of injured as 38 people. According to reports from Iranian news agencies, from 6 AM to 9 AM Iran time, at least 30 additional aftershocks occurred.

According to these reports, a number of homes and buildings in Ravor city and surrounding rural areas were destroyed by this earthquake.

In response to the Kerman earthquake, the Red Crescent deployed assessment teams and search dogs to the earthquake-affected areas. It is reported that emergency accommodation preparations for residents of the area have been made, and officials have dispatched helicopters to the affected areas to assess the extent of destruction.

Earthquake Predictions

The Kerman earthquake occurs 18 days after the Kermanshah earthquake. Following the Kermanshah earthquake, the Geomechanics Department of the German Research Center for Geosciences, located in Potsdam, had predicted the possibility of other earthquakes in areas surrounding Kermanshah province.

After the Kermanshah earthquake, the German news agency assessed the possibility of aftershocks in the days and even weeks following it. It was even predicted that potential aftershocks following the Kermanshah earthquake would be around 6 on the Richter scale.

Professor Marco Bohnhoff, head of the Geomechanics Department of the German Research Center for Geosciences, had assessed the likelihood of severe earthquakes in areas surrounding Kermanshah province as very strong. According to him, in the Zagros mountain range area, a severe earthquake occurs once every 100 or 150 years.
