Earthquake and 37 Aftershocks Hit Razavi Khorasan

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale struck Sefidsang in Razavi Khorasan Province at a depth of seven kilometers early Wednesday morning (May 3rd). Two other earthquakes also occurred in the early morning hours. The initial tremor was also felt in Mashhad.

At 1:24 AM on Wednesday (May 3rd), an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 Richter struck Razavi Khorasan Province. Two other earthquakes followed at 7:56 AM and 8:02 AM (local time), shaking the Sefidsang and Nasrabad areas. No reports of casualties or damages from these earthquakes have been released.

The Sefidsang area is located approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Mashhad.

Morteza Salimi, the head of Iran’s Emergency and Relief Organization, announced that 12 Red Crescent assessment teams have been dispatched to the area. According to ISNA’s report of Salimi’s statement: “The cities of Fariman, Sarakhs, Tabas, and Mashhad were affected by this earthquake.”

The head of the Emergency and Relief Organization stated that by 10:00 AM Wednesday, following assessments of 35 villages, no reports of casualties or financial damages have been submitted.

IRNA reported that by 9:00 AM Wednesday (local time), 37 aftershocks in Razavi Khorasan Province have been recorded by the Geophysics Institute.
