Research Findings: Over Half of World’s Children Face Poverty, War, and Gender Discrimination

A child protection foundation announced on Wednesday, June 9th in a report that more than half of the world’s children are exposed to three major threats: war, poverty, and gender discrimination against girls.

According to the French news agency, the “Save the Children” foundation in its report ranked the situation of children in 175 countries in terms of employment, child marriage, child pregnancy, and educational deprivation.

The report states that 1.2 billion children worldwide are exposed to one of three major threats.

According to the report, eight of the ten countries where children face the worst conditions are located in West and Central Africa, while children in Niger face the highest level of threat.

Meanwhile, Singapore, Slovenia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Iceland, Italy, and South Korea have been identified as the top ten countries in terms of children’s living conditions.

Hele Tørting Schmidt, executive director of the “Save the Children” charity foundation, said regarding this report: “More than half of the world’s children at the start of their lives face threats and deprivation because they are girls, are poor, or live in conflict zones.”

She added: “Governments can and must make every effort to ensure that every child has the best start in life.”

Ms. Tørting Schmidt emphasized: “Some countries have similar economic and income conditions, but we see striking differences in the conditions of children in them, which demonstrates that policies, budget allocation, and political commitment can have different and important results.”

The research states that more than one billion children in poor countries and 240 million children also in countries affected by conflict and violence live under these conditions. Meanwhile, 575 million girls live in countries where women and girls face serious discrimination.

According to this research, 153 million people living in 20 countries including South Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, and Afghanistan face all three major threats.
