16,000 Iranians Banned from Leaving Country in One Year Due to Debt

The head of Iran’s Organization for Registration of Deeds and Properties announced that in 2016, more than 16,000 debtors were prohibited from leaving the country. The travel ban has accelerated debt collection from debtors, with 8,492 people recovering their claims from debtors.

Some Iranian banks have announced “forgiveness of interest and penalties for bank debtors” to collect their debts, or are considering other incentives for debtors. However, imposing travel bans on debtors appears to have been the most effective way to recover debts. According to the head of Iran’s Organization for Registration of Deeds and Properties, more than half of the debtors were forced to pay their debts in 2016 to lift the travel ban restriction.

Ahmad Towserkani announced on Thursday (June 1, 2017 / Khordad 11) that banks’ collection of overdue accounts in 2016 increased by approximately 18 percent. According to Towserkani, 48,467 billion rials of banks’ overdue claims were collected in 2016, and compared to 2015 when 41,000 billion rials were collected, there was approximately 18 percent growth in the collection of overdue bank claims.

In 2016, more than 16,000 people were banned from leaving the country due to debt. According to the head of Iran’s Organization for Registration of Deeds and Properties, debtors were able to lift the travel ban in the same year after paying their debts.
