National Coalition for Democracy in Iran: The Problem is the Islamic Republic, Not the JCPOA; Iranian People are Hostages

A group known as the “National Coalition for Democracy in Iran” stated on Twitter that the problem is the Islamic Republic and not the JCPOA.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday, May 8, the group said that there should be no agreement with Iran’s “oppressive,” “corrupt,” and “warmongering” government that “has taken the Iranian people hostage.”

On Tuesday, Ordibehesht 18, President Donald Trump formally announced that the United States would withdraw from the 2015 comprehensive nuclear agreement between world powers and Iran.

President Trump, who had been critical of the agreement since the U.S. presidential elections, on Ordibehesht 18 criticized Iran’s regional policies and its support for terrorism, stating that Iran’s destabilizing behavior has intensified since the nuclear agreement and that America will not be held hostage to these issues.

While announcing Washington’s withdrawal from the agreement of Tir 23, 1394 between six world powers of the P5+1 group and Iran, he emphasized that America will negotiate with its allies to reach a new decision to prevent Iran’s destructive ambitions.

President Trump had previously given the U.S. Congress and European countries an opportunity to reform the JCPOA and stated that if the agreement were not amended, America would withdraw from it.

U.S. withdrawal from the agreement will bring with it the reinstatement of nuclear sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran; sanctions that had been lifted since Tir 1394.

The U.S. President says the Islamic Republic of Iran has not complied with the agreement. Based on a provision of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which was adopted after the nuclear agreement, the Islamic Republic of Iran is prohibited from testing ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Nevertheless, Iran has conducted several ballistic missile tests in the past two years, and Iranian missiles have been seen in the hands of some terrorist and insurgent groups in the region.
