US Secretary of State: Iran Has Complied with JCPOA

Rex Tillerson has informed the U.S. House of Representatives that Iran has fulfilled its obligations under the JCPOA. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has requested an examination of whether the lifting of sanctions on Iran serves U.S. national interests.

Rex Tillerson, U.S. Secretary of State, in a letter to Paul Ryan, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, stated that Iran has complied with its commitments under the nuclear agreement until April 18 (April 29 in the Persian calendar), and that the lifting of sanctions will remain in place. Tillerson also stated in this letter that Iran, through various means and methods, continues to be counted among the “primary sponsors of terrorism.”

He further stated that the National Security Council has been tasked by Trump’s order to conduct a review of the JCPOA to determine whether the suspension of sanctions on Iran is vital to ensuring U.S. national security interests.

In the latest report released by Iran’s Foreign Ministry earlier this week, it stated that the sanctions imposed against the Islamic Republic due to nuclear activities pertained to “the oil and gas sector, the transportation sector, the banking and financial sector, and subsidiary sectors including electricity and water, industry and commerce, health and treatment, agriculture, and…” and that “the vast majority” of them have been lifted.

Nevertheless, sanctions imposed due to human rights violations against Iran were increased last week and, according to Steven Mnuchin, U.S. Treasury Secretary, will be further tightened in the future.
