High Waves and Flooding in Deir Port Leave 1 Dead, 5 Missing and 20 Injured

A natural phenomenon that resulted in high waves and flooding in parts of Bushehr province left 1 dead, 5 missing and 20 injured.

The head of Iran’s Crisis Management Organization told ISNA news agency on Sunday, March 29 that the rare phenomenon known as “seiche” caused high waves and water surge to enter the shores of Deir Port, Assaluyeh and Nakhl Taghi in Bushehr province, and in addition to leaving several injured and missing persons, it also caused damage to buildings and boats.

Ismail Najar said that this rare phenomenon occurs with severe air currents and strong winds and sometimes causes waves of up to 30 meters in length.

According to him, a number of the injured from the incident were Nowruz holiday travelers.

In this regard, the emergency services commander also announced that of the 20 injured in the incident, eight were in critical condition and were transferred to hospitals.

According to him, water in these areas of Bushehr province has receded, but emergency forces remain on standby.

According to Mehr news agency, Hamzeh Ettemad, the governor of Deir County, also said that the body of one of the victims of the sea water surge phenomenon in this county was found on Sunday morning.

This incident also caused damage to approximately 300 fishing and recreational boats in Deir County.

Bushehr province and several other southern Iranian provinces also faced severe flooding and waterlogging last month following heavy rainfall in southern Iran. Southern regions of Iran are among the main destinations for Nowruz holiday travelers.
