Confirmation of 10-Year Prison Sentence for Narges Mohammadi in Appeals Court

The heavy sentence of ten years imprisonment for imprisoned human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been confirmed in the appeals court.

Ms. Mohammadi had previously been sentenced to five years imprisonment on charges of “assembly and conspiracy with intent to commit a crime against national security,” one year imprisonment on charges of “propaganda activities against the system,” and ten years imprisonment on charges of “forming and managing the illegal Legam group.”

The website of the Defenders of Human Rights Center reported on Wednesday, September 28, that the sentence issued for Narges Mohammadi, spokeswoman and vice-chair of this center, has been confirmed “exactly as is” in the appeals court.

Based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, when multiple sentences are issued against a defendant, the longest sentence issued is taken as the criterion. Accordingly, the ten-year prison sentence has been set for this human rights activist.

According to Taghi Rahmani, a political activist and husband of Ms. Rahmani, the appeals court issued its ruling before the scheduled time and prior to receiving documents from Narges Rahmani’s lawyers.

Mr. Rahmani had previously told Voice of America that this heavy sentence “is retaliatory” and indicates serious opposition by the judicial system to human rights activities.

Narges Mohammadi, who is currently imprisoned, suffers from two diseases: pulmonary embolism and muscular paralysis, and according to physicians, the complications of these two conditions are exacerbated in prison environments and stressful conditions.

She has repeatedly suffered nervous shocks while imprisoned and was hospitalized in the hospital while shackled and in chains.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, following the issuance of the sentence in the primary court presided over by Judge Selavati, called it shocking and demanded the release of this human rights activist from Iran’s judicial system.
