Mahshahr Petrochemical Complex Catches Fire Again

Hours after extinguishing a fire in one of the towers of the Avicenna petrochemical complex in southwestern Iran, the complex’s storage tanks caught fire again on Thursday morning, July 17.

According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, oil leakage from one of the tanks and the intense remaining heat from the previous fire caused the flames to reignite.

Tasnim news agency reported that the crisis management headquarters, which was formed to handle the incident, has warned of the danger of fire spreading and issued orders to evacuate other tanks in the petrochemical unit.

The Avicenna Petrochemical Complex is located in the special economic zone of Imam Khomeini Port in Mahshahr city in Khuzestan province.

A fire also broke out in one of the towers of the Avicenna complex on Wednesday evening.

According to IRNA, tower 8001 is “the tallest metal tower in the Middle East” in the petrochemical industry.

Firefighting units have been deployed to the scene to bring the fire under control again.
