Controversy Over Salary Slips; An Iranian Official Sentenced to Prison

Nasser Seraj, head of the Inspection Organization of Iran, announced that a manager of one of the institutions has been sentenced to prison in connection with their salary amount.

Mr. Seraj said today, Sunday, June 26 (July 6), regarding the reason for issuing the prison sentence for this government official, that he refused to provide explanations to the Inspection Organization about the amount of his salary and declined to submit documents related to his compensation.

The name of this manager and the organization where he works has not been disclosed.

According to the statement of the head of Iran’s Inspection Organization, the prison sentence for this government official has not yet been executed.

The salary amounts of government officials and the publication of salary slips worth tens of millions of tomans for some managers of insurance companies and banks in media critical of the government have turned into a controversy in Iran’s political sphere.

On the other hand, Iran newspaper published a list of ninth and tenth government officials under the leadership of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and claimed that many political figures in that period received up to 100 gold coins and tens of millions of tomans in bonuses.

In response to these incidents, some government officials voluntarily published their salary slips. Some ordinary citizens also posted their own salary slips on social media as a sign of protest, showing that compared to government officials, they receive tens of times less in salary.

Isaac Jahangiri, First Vice President of Iran, promised today at the end of the Salary and Wage Council meeting that he will deal with those receiving illegal and “unconventional” salaries.

According to Mr. Jahangiri, based on Article 74 of the Civil Service Management Law, all government institutions of the Islamic Republic system must obtain permission from the Salary and Wage Council for determining or changing the salaries and benefits of their employees or any new payments.

Hassan Rouhani, President of Iran, said two weeks ago that salaries and benefits paid outside the legal framework should be returned to the government treasury and the offending official should be removed.

After several days of struggle and confirmation and denial of reports about the dismissal or resignation of the manager of Refah Bank, today Ali Rabiei, Minister of Labor, Welfare and Social Affairs, said on the sidelines of a ceremony that the new manager of Refah Bank will be introduced tomorrow.

It was previously stated that 240 million tomans from the amounts that the then-manager of Refah Bank received as salary and benefits were returned to the government treasury.
