Trial of Nahid Togaei Begins on “Security” Charges in Islamic Revolutionary Court

Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Court has begun the trial of Nahid Togaei, an Iranian-German dual national, on charges of acting against national security. Maryam Claren has expressed concern about her mother’s physical condition. The date of the next court hearing remains unclear.

The first session of Nahid Togaei’s trial was held on April 28 (8th of Ordibehesht) in Branch 26 of Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Court. It has been stated that her next hearing will be held soon. However, no specific date for this session has been announced.

France’s news agency reported on Wednesday, April 28, about the first session of Nahid Togaei’s trial. The 66-year-old Nahid Togaei was arrested in her apartment in Tehran in October of last year (25th of Mehr).

According to information released by the International Human Rights Defense Society, Nahid Togaei was a civil activist and a defender of women’s rights and freedom of expression.

Maryam Claren, daughter of Nahid Togaei, announced the beginning of her mother’s trial in the aforementioned branch of Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Court through a Twitter post. Nahid Togaei’s daughter also expressed that she has no information about the date of her mother’s next hearing.

Maryam Claren stated that her mother, after seven months in prison, has been granted visitation rights with her brothers. However, Nahid Togaei’s brothers had been prevented from attending her trial session.

Iranian Islamic Republic officials have classified Nahid Togaei’s charges as “security-related” and accused her of propaganda against the system.

Maryam Claren told a France Press Agency reporter that her mother was an architect and is currently imprisoned in Evin Prison.

Meanwhile, Nahid Togaei’s daughter announced that her mother spent the past four weeks in solitary confinement. Maryam Claren has expressed concerns about her mother’s health condition in Evin Prison.

According to Maryam Claren’s statements, her mother’s defense lawyer, after several months, gained access to the indictment and her client’s case file for the first time last Saturday.

Heiko Maas, Germany’s Foreign Minister, also announced in October of last year that he had been informed of the arrest of this Iranian-German dual national.

The International Human Rights Defense Society has considered Nahid Togaei innocent and has called for the immediate release of this civil activist and women’s rights defender.
