Asylum seekers confess to murder to avoid being deported

German authorities say asylum seekers are confessing to serious crimes, even murder, to avoid being deported. The phenomenon has been on the rise in Germany, especially in the state of Hesse, since the beginning of 2017.

Asylum seekers in the state of Hesse are confessing to murder in their home country to prevent their deportation from Germany. The number of such people has increased especially in recent months.

Nadia Niesen, a spokeswoman for the Frankfurt prosecutor, says that if asylum seekers are threatened with the death penalty, that is a reason not to return them.

According to German authorities, the number of asylum seekers claiming to have committed crimes in their country has increased since November 2016.

According to a spokesman for the Frankfurt prosecutor's office, 60 such cases have been filed in the state of Hesse alone in the political department. According to the confessions of these asylum seekers, criminal charges should be filed against them. Most of the confessors give a "superficial description" of their crime.

German parliament's facility for refugee deportation

According to a spokesman for the Frankfurt prosecutor, most of these people have committed political crimes. Some of these refugees described being kidnapped by the Taliban and killing one of their guards while escaping.

Another asylum seeker says he committed theft as a teenager.

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) reported similar problems with Afghan refugees in April 2017.

Some Afghan refugees have claimed to have been members of the Taliban to avoid being deported. Their cases are taken seriously when the person in question is threatened with torture or execution because of their past Taliban activity in Afghanistan.
