Israel strongly criticizes EU representative's presence at presidential inauguration

The European Union is planning to send Enrique Moura, Josep Borrell's deputy, to Iran to attend the inauguration of Ebrahim Raisi, a decision that has drawn sharp criticism from the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which has called for the trip to be canceled.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has considered the sending of a senior diplomat by the European Union to attend Ebrahim Raisi's inauguration ceremony an incorrect decision that arose from a failure to recognize the sensitivity of the moment.

Israel believes that the presence of the EU representative at the inauguration ceremony legitimizes “state terrorism in Iran.” The Israeli Foreign Ministry is referring to the attack on the Mercer Strait tanker on Thursday, July 29, which killed two European citizens.

The European Union is planning to send Enrique Moura to Iran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Raisi, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, August 5th.

Enrique Moura, the EU representative in the negotiations to revive the JCPOA, is in Vienna. The Israeli Foreign Ministry has stated that sending an EU representative to Iran means legitimizing Iran's aggressive approach.

Israel has asked the European Union to cancel Mora's trip to Iran. An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman said the EU's sending a senior representative to the inauguration of the "Butcher of Tehran" was a sign of the EU's misjudgment of the situation.

Federica Mogherini, then EU foreign policy coordinator, also attended Hassan Rouhani's inauguration ceremony.
