Iranians rally in Washington in response to the suppression of civil protests in Iran

A group of Iranians living in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland gathered in front of the White House on Sunday, December 27, in response to peaceful protests in Isfahan and Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari and the violent suppression of protesters by the Islamic Republic's security forces.

Dr. Ramesh Sepehrrad, a supporter of the People's Mojahedin Organization and coordinator of the protest rally, told VOA that the goal of the rally is to stand in solidarity with the Iranian people and bring their voices to the White House. He added that the only way to free the Iranian people is to rise up and overthrow the Islamic Republic.

Tara Shafi'i, a supporter of the National Council of Resistance of Iran and the People's Mojahedin Organization, also stated that the reason for holding the rally in front of the White House was to bring the voices of the protesters to the ears of White House officials, and believed that the Biden administration should adopt a clear policy towards the Islamic Republic.

Pahlevan Muslim Eskandar Filabi was one of the other protesters present at the rally. In an interview with a VOA reporter, he said his goal in participating in the rally was to ask the world to save the Iranian people from the "hostage" of the Islamic Republic.

In the end, the protesters showed their solidarity with the peaceful protests in Iran with a symbolic march around the square overlooking the White House, chanting slogans such as "Isfahan, Chaharmahal, we support you," "The cry of every Iranian, death to Khamenei, Raisi," and "We are fighting men and women, fight until we fight."

Peaceful protests by farmers and citizens of Isfahan due to the water shortage crisis and the mismanagement of the Islamic Republic government in this regard began about three weeks ago and have been met with violent repression by the Islamic Republic's security forces.

Ned Price, a spokesman for the US State Department, tweeted on Saturday, expressing "deep concern over the violent crackdown on peaceful protesters in Isfahan," adding: "The Iranian people have the right to express their frustration and hold their government accountable."
